One of the most important things to consider at the beginning of the school year is the layout of the preschool day care classroom. Since preschool is often a child's introduction to the world of school, it must be an environment where they experience the fun of learning. This allows children an opportunity to develop a set of positive feelings and associations with the classroom that they'll carry with them throughout the remainder of their educational days.

The layout of the preschool day care classroom must be conducive to learning and play while keeping the children safe. Preschoolers are constantly on the move, so organizing this chaotic environment can sometimes be a bit of a challenge.

Many educational experts have written theories on the layout of the preschool day care classroom. Of these experts, one of the most credible and commonly read is Maria Montessori, who insists that everything in a preschool classroom such as the chairs, tables, shelves, and cubbies should be appropriately sized for its pint-sized students. As an instructor setting up their own preschool classroom, try looking at everything while kneeling down to gain the child's eye view.

When developing the layout of a preschool classroom, divide the room up into the necessary sections. These include, but are not limited to, art, blocks, dramatic play, manipulative, music, library, and science. Some instructors also include a writing area near the library, and others are lucky enough to have an indoor playground as a part of the classroom experience.

Remember that certain areas require more space than others, such as dramatic play and blocks. These areas tend to be noisier than others, and as such, they should be grouped together in the classroom. Quieter activities like art and reading should also be placed together on the opposite side of the room, if possible. To mark the boundaries between the areas, use shelving units or colored duct tape on the floor.

It's important to keep the center of the classroom free from large objects as that's where the children assemble in a large circle for story time or show-and-tell. The walls of the preschool classroom can be decorated with seasonal decorations, samples of the children's art, a large wall calendar labeled with important dates and activities, a weather chart, and an attendance chart with a picture of each child.

Get out the Label Maker

Though most preschoolers are not yet able to read, it's important to label everything in the classroom. This will teach children some basic words, and within the course of the year, they should be able to recognize and read these words, forming an excellent foundation for learning to read.

Each section of the classroom should also be labeled with a sign hanging on the wall above the center. Graphics can be added to these signs to help show children what is performed in each center. For example, on the "Art Center" sign above the art area cut out pictures of a paint brush, paint, crayon or pair of scissors.

The Differences Between PhD and EdD in Higher Education

There has been much confusion between the two terminal degrees in higher education: the PhD in Higher Education and the EdD in Higher Education, as both are forms of advancing one's career. However, with a proper understanding of what each degree is, the differences can be easily distinguished.

First of all, we will make sense of the abbreviation. 'PhD' is an abbreviation on Doctor of Philosophy, which emphasizes on original researches in specific fields. In the PhD in this field, the original researches focused are in specific academic fields of study. During the course of this study, the first two years will usually focus much on particular fields that you are interested in specializing. A dissertation is handed in as the last project for this degree. This degree, in a lot of countries, is one of the highest degrees in education one can get, which opens out the doors to a lot of career options. In fact, some job positions only recruit PhD holders, such as a university professor.

In contrast, EdD is the abbreviation for Doctor of Education Degree, which emphasizes on the practice of education. The focus in Phd would be the practice of higher education. Unlike dissertations that address specific issues, a doctoral study addresses issues that arise out of the practice in education. A lot of academic faculties accept this degree for teaching positions; however, it is not as lucrative and well-accepted in every institution as the PhD.

Social Entrepreneurship in Context of the World Economic Forum

"We are living in an increasingly schizophrenic world where economies are booming and global signs are promising but underneath are economic, political and social risks as well as imbalances and inconsistencies," said Klaus Schwab, the Forum's Founder and Executive Chairman. "We want to make sense of this world and shape the global agenda, taking into consideration the fragilities of global development and global systems. This is the unique contribution we make each year - to analyse the state of the world, the challenges, risks and opportunities. We sort out our priorities and come out with solutions to our problems."

I think that an organization such as the World Economic Forum that allows people to take initiative develops individuals who have the highest degree of satisfaction because they feel they're making a difference and touching people's lives. They go on to then take real ownership for the success and betterment of the organization.

Another thing that makes WEF great is the broad diversity of talented, exceptional, committed people. When you bring together people from diverse backgrounds, ethnicities, work, and academic experiences, they literally see different information in the environment and approach situations differently. It has been my experience that such a diverse team brings the broadest amount of information to bear on a situation, and with broader information one is enabled to make better decisions that will translate into a better outcome.

While globalization has resulted in an unprecedented expansion of global trade and investment that has spurred the world economy to grow at its fastest pace in three decades, lifting hundreds of millions out of poverty, the benefits are not evenly shared. Renewed efforts are needed to mitigate the negative effects of globalization.

Today decisive and urgent steps need to be taken to combat the negative effects of increased industrialization. This new world order requires a fresh, pragmatic approach to global governance and management of the global agenda, including the reform of international institutions, agreements to rebalance relationships in the world to acknowledge power shifts and promotion of Social Entrepreneurship.

In fact the advancements in technology, global risks and the multiplying pressures from rapid globalization have increased the responsibilities of companies and their leaders, challenging them to find new and innovative approaches to doing business. Chief executives must now look beyond shareholder interests and cater for the needs and concerns of a wider group of stakeholders, employees who want to work for socially responsible enterprises and shareholders who demand greater transparency and better governance.

Social Entrepreneurship is a subject very close to my heart. I believe that much as entrepreneurs change the face of business, social entrepreneurs act as the cataclysmic change agents for society, seizing opportunities others miss and improving systems, inventing new approaches, and creating solutions to change society for the better. While a business entrepreneur might create entirely new industries, a social entrepreneur comes up with new solutions to social problems and then implements them on a large scale. My career objective is to spread awareness of this concept which is the process of recognizing and resourcefully pursuing opportunities to create social value.

Unfortunately more often than not social entrepreneurship is mistakenly identified predominantly with non-profit bodies generating earned income. When the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship named Linda and Millard Fuller of Habitat for Humanity and Wendy Kopp of Teach for America, among others, as outstanding social entrepreneurs, it did confuse many people! Both organizations are well known, but neither of them is known for its earned income strategies. They rely heavily on grants and donations. In fact, these social entrepreneurs are masterful at attracting philanthropic donations. What makes them entrepreneurial is that each of them has pioneered creative ways of addressing social problems and marshalled the resources to support their work. Habitat mobilizes volunteers to build affordable houses for the poor. Teach for America recruits talented college graduates to teach in economically distressed schools. This outstanding decision by WEF lent credence to the view expressed by Bill Drayton at Ashoka that social entrepreneurship is about innovation and impact, not income.

Like Sir Winston Churchill put it "Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts." We live in a world of speed and instant access, yet it is common for entrepreneurs to have minimal business success, on average failing 17 times, before they reach the pinnacle of success. Thus it really does not matter how long it takes, what matters is finally getting there in the end.

Social Entrepreneurship is about innovation and impact which makes the focus on income redundant. What one needs to do today is to pioneer creative ways of tackling social problems powerfully.
